Nick was diagnosed with a malignant cancerous tumor called Retinoblastoma – RB. This type of tumor originates in the retina, the layer of the eye, which enables the eye to see. This type of RB is considered unilateral because it affects only one eye and it is sporadic because Nick had no genetic history of this type of cancer in our family. Since the tumor was very close to Nick’s optic nerve, which is a highway to his brain, it was very important to remove the tumor as quickly as possible. We had some tough decisions to make in a very short period of time. The decision to remove our son’s eye could not be taken lightly. In the perfect world one might get a second opinion. In practice however, 300 cases of this type of cancer reported in the US, 5 doctors that specialize in this type of tumor, and we were consulting with Dr. Devron Char who has extensive experience with this disease. We made a decision.
